Changing Power steering to Manual
Question
- Date: Fri, 03 Oct 2003
- Hi Adrian,
- I was wondering if anybody out there would know what has to be done to convert a Leyland power steering rack to manual steering as was done on the World Cup rally car P76?
- Thankyou.

- Hi Richard,
- This is testing the memory banks I did the exact same thing to my rally
- car in 1982.
- At first, I only removed the pump and blanked the pipes feeding from
- the
- pump. This caused the steering to "catch" on full lock during
- competition conditions. That could be embarrassing on public roads.
- I then removed the valving inside the rack (where the steering shaft
- attaches) still leaving the fluid for lubrication and it then
- functioned
- correctly for another 4 years of competition.
- Somebody out there may be able to help with a more technical
- explanation.
- Regards,
- Darryl

- To convert a power rack to manual,
- Remove pump etc. and fill the pinion with oil then seal up the rack pinion hose holes.
- Take the main shaft out of the rack then remove the piston and seal from the centre of this shaft (This piston is soldered where is sits on the shaft) so remove solder and circlips then reassemble rack.(Fill boots with engine oil).
- The rack in my rally car was done this way in 1974 and is still in operation. Has survived two round Oz trials.
