Installing AC equipment on a P76 V8 motor

Question

Tuesday, March 02, 2004
Hi,
I'm not a P76 owner, however I do have a triumph stag with a P76 V8 conversion. I hope you
can help me out, our possibly pass on the details of someone who can help.
I want to install AC into my stag and I uderstand that the P76 had AC as an option. I would
like to know what type of compresor the P76 used and also some information about it's mounting bracket to
the engine i.e part numbers etc. if possible. Anyhelp or pictures you may be able to provide to help
me with this would be appreciated. Hopefully this will enable me to tell if it would all fit under the
bonnet, or if I'de need to fabricate a custom mount to get things to fit.
Regards,
Barney Timms

Hello
P76 used a york twin piston compressor.these come in a few different capacities but all look the same.these are very good at low engine speeds, and the leyland used smaller drive pulley[faster].have seen some with max efficiency 2000-2500 RPM
look 300 KG of these to scrap today.these are not good for non concourse leyland.
I recomend a SCROLL type pump Sanden TR series.these dont work well at low speeds but are good on fuel..they are small and can fit allmost anywhere.
DENSO brand piston pumps come in all shapes and sizes,Very easy to mount with home made brakets.they are also easy to repair but best thing with them is that the blow up and you just replace the core with a reco unit.
Sanden piston pumps new types are 7 cyl and these are very good.Chinese made exact copy is being sold now very cheep but might not be for long.
Eng brackets are mostly in house made for these type of cars. But if you hassel the right a/c repair buisness you can get ready made.

The compressor was a piston type which is unusable with with modern gasses.
That makes the mounting bracket redundant.
A custom mounted rotary compressor is the way to go. He will need the 3 belt pulley.
If he hasn't got one it is easy enough to mount another pulley on the harmonic balacer.
An idler/tensioner wheel will be his biggest problem but not insurmountable.

I have a little Nippon denso compressor on mine. Its off a subaru. 10PA15L.
I Picked it up off the wreckers for $55.00. Had to put a seal kit in it. Works perfect.
The top bracket is an alternator bracket off a V8 P76, just reversed.
The bottom bracket was a little tricky , but well worth it.
see attached pic.

10PA15 is a mid range/size compressor.10PA13[S] 10PA17[L].
Should be good with under dash unit.but may need a electric fan on the condensor for slow traffic running.have a good look at the front pulley bearings, the smaller dia bearing [landcruisers/camry] fail at very low km travelled.
Don't know what Subaru its off as it looks like old late 1980's. Subaru here mostly have big hitachi and new throw away panasonics.
Toyota van and hilux are a good source for 10PA17.
As it harder to get a screw on type pipes now.
