		| Leyland P76 Owners 2004 | Technical Question and Answers | | Starter Motors for 4.4 ltr motor

From: "Adrian"To: Sent: Wednesday, November 03, 2004I have been advised that you have starter motors for P76 engines. Our technical officer has looked at the photograph on the websitehttp://www.enginecentre.com.au/starters-leyland.html and has warned us to be careful as it is one of two types of starter motors used in the P76 engine. My question is, do you carry both types of starter motors? From: "Graeme Webb" Date: Fri, 5 Nov 2004As far as we know there is only one starter that we sell for the P76 and we sell quite a few of them and no one has returned any. This starter will cost you $385 + postageThanksGraemeDate: Wed, 10 Nov 2004 21:55:27 +1000GraemeI have had a look at your starter motor and yes its the same as I make. There is how ever the other starter motor with an offset of 1/16 of an inch.We call then eccentric starter motors as they are for the P76 motor with a1/8 in larger diameter flywheel. These starters have a triangle eched on thenose cone. Most of the late model P76's came out with this flywheel. If youus one of your starter motor on a P76 motor with the larger flywheel then itwill work, but slowly destroy the ring gear. With the P76 starter motor nosecone being so thin it usually breaks off the nose cone and thus stuffs thestarter. As an auto electrician by trade I have a about 20 or so with thisproblem sitting in my stuffed box. Your's and my starter has a much stronger front end and thus doesn't break, but will slowly destroy the ringgear.I know as I have made one of these starters to test the theory.(see attached pic).
