Date: Fri, 3 Oct 2003 10:54:19 +1000 Hi Richard,This is testing the memory banks I did the exact same thing to my rallycar in 1982.At first, I only removed the pump and blanked the pipes feeding from thepump. This caused the steering to "catch" on full lock duringcompetition conditions. That could be embarrassing on public roads.I then removed the valving inside the rack (where the steering shaftattaches) still leaving the fluid for lubrication and it then functionedcorrectly for another 4 years of competition.Somebody out there may be able to help with a more technicalexplanation.Regards,Darryl

Sat, 4 Oct 2003 12:29To convert a power rack to manual,Remove pump etc. and fill the pinion with oil then seal up the rack pinion hose holes. Take the main shaft out of the rack then remove the piston and seal from the centre of this shaft (This piston is soldered where is sits on the shaft) so remove solder and circlips then reassemble rack.(Fill boots with engine oil). The rack in my rally car was done this way in 1974 and is still in operation. Has survived two round Oz trials.Hal Moloney
